For David’s 70th Birthday, he and his wife threw a quaint little lunch party in their own garden in the pretty village of Ashampstead. As much as we love catering for large events and weddings, it was really nice to be part of an intimate event full of family and close friends. The relaxed atmosphere and beautiful weather made out for a truly enjoyable day which we loved being involved in.
The day started with a drinks reception served from Lys and David’s kitchen which looked out onto the garden through large patio doors. The table was set up just through the doorway and guests could enjoy delicious summer beverages such as super fruity Pimms loaded with strawberries, mango and mint. They could also choose the most traditional of all reception drinks, champagne, which is a must have at any birthday celebration, and also, cool and refreshing beers. The children could enjoy soft drinks too, full to the brim with ice, to keep them going whilst playing around in the garden. Whilst drinks were being served, one of our waitresses was serving our tasty canapés. This was their chosen selection;
Baby Yorkshire Puddings with Rare Beef and Horseraddish Cream
Lime and Garlic King Prawns
Sun Dried Tomato, Black Olive and Basil Tapenade on Crostini
Goat’s Cheese and Rocket Flat Bread
Mini Jacket Potatoes with Sour Cream and Chives
The guests seemed to love their choices, as the canapé board was emptied on every return! After an hour of canapés and drinks being circulated, the guests took to the marquee ready for the main event – lunch.
The marquee looked beautifully understated with simple white linen and subtle decorations. Each of the tables were named after a famous decade and an important event or person from that era. Also on each table were pots of single coloured roses, which really popped against the white background.
Tartare of Smoked Salmon, Soft Boiled Egg, Capers and Cornichons Served with a Bitter Chicory Salad
Carved Chump of Lamb with Pea and Mint Crushed Potatoes, Buttered Broad Beans, Asparagus and a Herb Vinaigrette
Spinach, Ricotta and Sun Dried Tomato Wellington
A Trio of White Wine Poached Pear, Lemon Custard Tart with Raspberry Purée and Salted Chocolate Torte
The meal went down an absolute treat, with compliments to the chef all round. It was such a colourful menu, which really reflected the atmosphere and the sunny weather. The bright yellow of the egg against the pink of the salmon had a really fun and summery effect, as did the bright green vegetables in the main course. Finally, the fuchsia pink of the raspberry purée against the yellow finished the meal off perfectly with summer vibes. The guests continued to enjoy the party, with tea and coffee served to each table. David made a speech about his friends and family, and they tucked into some delicious cupcakes that had been created especially for David by his friend.
The cupcakes were located at the front of the marquee as a centre focus point for the room throughout the meal, meaning that our waiters could smell the delicious chocolateyness all day, stomachs rumbling left, right and centre! It was such a lovely, intimate gathering and we really enjoyed catering for Lys and David.
